LPS Centennial: 1904-2004
1904: The beginning of Little Point Sable as a summer resort...
In 1904, John H. Hill, an attorney from Chicago, opened the brand new Old Orchard Lodge. Construction had begun after Mr. Hill had purchased (in 1902) the property that was to become "Little Point Sable." Old Point histories list Catherine Edwards (sister of Sarah Edwards Thompson) as among the first guests at the Lodge. Some other families that came to stay at the Lodge that first summer in 1904 are still "Pointers" to this day, marking an unending string of 101 (as of 2005) years at LPS. (We'll later list these original Point families - who still are Point families. (Do you know how many such Point Centennial families there are?)
Old Orchard Lodge, as it appeared in the early 1900s
Prior to 1904, there were several farms and a few structures in the area: the old store and post office, the farm house, “Redwing”...but LPS, as a summer resort, really began in 1904.
In 2002, we celebrated the 75th anniversary of the formation of the Little Point Sable Association. In 2003, we commemorated the 75th anniversary of the LPS Church.
In 2004, we celebrated the Centennial of LPS ... The Point!
Many thanks to Bob Mulvihill, who, dressed in a 1904-era suit, led the Sing on July 18, 2004 and featured The Point Centennial and related names, places, and events as his theme.
